What is osteopathic manipulation?

Osteopathic manipulation is a tactile approach to medicine that uses the hands to help diagnose and treat a wide array of medical issues. Also called osteopathic manipulative treatment, or OMT, the technique involves the therapist's use of their hands to help determine the cause of pain and other symptoms through gentle resistance, stretching and other movements that help pinpoint the source. During treatment, muscles, joints, ligaments and other tissues are gently palpated to look for abnormal signs and symptoms that can help guide treatment. OMT can also be used to relieve pressures and restore balance in joints and other areas of your body to help relieve pain and improve range of motion.

What is involved in osteopathic manipulation?

Your treatment will begin with a review of your symptoms as well as a discussion of your recent activities that could have resulted in tissue injury. During the visit, your joints, ligaments, tendons and other musculoskeletal structures will be evaluated using gentle stretching and resistance techniques designed to “zero in” on the causes of pain and other symptoms. In addition to helping diagnose issues within the musculoskeletal system, your visit may also evaluate your nerves, circulation and lymphatic system, all of which can play major roles in a wide array of conditions. Once the cause of your symptoms has been identified, OMT techniques may be used to relieve symptoms or different types of follow-up care may be recommended.

What sorts of conditions can OMT be used to treat?

Osteopathic manipulation has broad applications in many diseases and medical conditions, including diagnosis and treatment of:

  • knee pain

  • shoulder pain

  • low back pain, including sciatica

  • carpal tunnel syndrome

  • migraines and other chronic headaches

  • neck pain

  • chronic regional pain syndrome (CRPS)

  • fibromyalgia

Some patients have found OMT can even help with menstrual cramps and sinus problems by helping to promote proper lymphatic drainage and reduce inflammation.
