What is sciatica?

Sciatica is one of the most common causes of low back pain. It occurs when the sciatic nerve – a long nerve that extends from the lower back down each leg – becomes irritated and inflamed, causing pain that can extend from the lower back all the way down the leg. Sciatica is often caused by a herniated disc, and it can also occur after long periods of standing or sitting, as a result of weight gain, or from wearing high heels or sleeping on a mattress that doesn't provide proper support .

What symptoms does sciatica cause?

The most common symptoms of sciatica are radiating pain that begins in the low back and extends through the buttocks and sometimes the thigh. Pain can range from a shooting electrical-type pain to a dull, persistent ache. It may also be accompanied by tingling sensations, numbness or even weakness in the muscles.

Is sciatica the only type of lower back pain?

No, pain the lower back can also be caused by ill-fitting shoes, repetitive lifting, muscle strain and diseases and injury to the spine, including arthritis and spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spine), as well as many other causes. Having a comprehensive evaluation of your back and your symptoms is the key to getting the most appropriate and most effective therapeutic care.

How can a physical therapist help to relieve lower back pain and sciatica?

Depending on the underlying cause of your pain, physical therapy can be used to help reduce inflammation and swelling that can irritate nerves, restore flexibility to the spine and strengthen core muscles to avoid muscle strain in the future. Plus, depending on your specific needs, you may also receive education and advice about steps you can take to improve your work and lifestyle habits to help prevent injury and pain in the future.
