Acupuncture
Traditional Chinese medicine, with Inga Fruman, L.Ac.

Acupuncture
Acupuncture, an ancient form of traditional Chinese medicine, is a holistic therapy designed to promote healing and balance within the body. Through the strategic insertion of fine needles into specific points along the body's meridian pathways, Acupuncture stimulates the flow of energy (Qi), aiding in restoring harmony and alleviating various ailments.
Understanding Acupuncture
Acupuncture operates on the principle that the body’s vital energy, known as Qi, flows through meridians. When these energy pathways are disrupted or blocked, it can result in pain, discomfort, or illness. By targeting precise points along these meridians, Acupuncture aims to unblock and regulate the flow of Qi, facilitating the body’s natural ability to heal.
Benefits of Acupuncture
This therapy has shown remarkable effectiveness in addressing a wide range of conditions, including but not limited to:
- Pain Management: alleviating chronic pain conditions such as headaches, back pain, arthritis, and menstrual discomfort.
- Stress Relief: promoting relaxation and reducing stress, anxiety, and depression.
- Enhanced Well-being: improving overall physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
- Supporting Various Conditions: assisting in the management of digestive issues, insomnia, allergies, and more.
The Acupuncture Experience
During an Acupuncture session, thin, sterile needles are gently inserted into specific points on the body. This process is generally painless and is often accompanied by a sense of relaxation. Many individuals find Acupuncture to be a soothing and revitalizing experience.

How It Works
How an acupuncture session works
Acupuncture is performed by Inga Fruman, L.Ac., who is Board Certified in Acupuncture, Chinese Herbology and Oriental Medicine by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. A session begins with a consultation, after which fine, sterile, single-use needles are inserted at selected points on the body.
The needles stay in place while you rest, usually lying down, for a period during the session. Most people describe the process as relaxing; sensations at the point of insertion are typically brief.

What to Expect
One-on-one care, built around you
Your care begins with a one-on-one evaluation. Rather than focusing on the symptoms alone, we establish a cause and effect relationship through accurate palpation and assessment of the body, then build a rehabilitation program customized to your individual needs.
- A consultation first, covering your health history, current symptoms and what you are hoping to address.
- Needle insertion at selected points, then a period of rest with the needles in place. You will be checked on and can call for the practitioner at any point.
- Loose clothing helps, since several common points are on the lower legs, forearms, back and abdomen.
- A plan discussed with you afterwards, including whether and when to return.
Common Questions
Questions we are asked about Acupuncture
- Does acupuncture hurt?
- The needles are much finer than the ones used for injections. Insertion is generally painless, and many people find the session relaxing. A brief sensation at a point — a dull ache, warmth or heaviness — is normal. Tell the practitioner if anything is more than that.
- Are the needles clean?
- Yes. Needles are sterile, single-use and disposed of after your session. They are never reused.
- What should I do before and after a session?
- Eat something beforehand rather than arriving hungry, wear loose clothing, and avoid scheduling anything strenuous straight afterwards. Some people feel relaxed or a little tired after a session.
- Can I have acupuncture alongside my physical therapy?
- Acupuncture is offered here alongside the practice's other services. Call (212) 922-0044 and the front desk will explain how it can be scheduled with the rest of your care.
- Is it covered by insurance?
- We accept major insurance providers, but coverage for acupuncture varies by plan, and some plans ask for a physician's referral or prescription while others do not. Call (212) 922-0044 before your first visit and we will confirm your coverage and tell you what, if anything, you need to bring.
