Foot & Ankle Pain
The base of the chain, assessed with the knee and hip.

Foot & Ankle Pain
The foot and ankle carry and distribute every step, so symptoms there frequently involve how the knee and hip are working above them, and how the foot is loaded during walking. We examine the whole chain, treat the structures the examination implicates, and give you the strength and mobility work the area needs.
How It Works
How we assess and treat a foot and ankle
The foot and ankle carry and distribute every step, so the examination looks at how the foot is loaded through the walking cycle and at the knee and hip above it, as well as at the painful structure itself.
Treatment addresses what the examination implicates and is paired with the mobility and strength work the area needs to tolerate walking and standing again.
What It Addresses
What foot and ankle treatment addresses
Foot and ankle treatment here is used to address presentations like these. What is driving yours is established at the evaluation.
- Heel pain, including pain with the first steps in the morning
- Ankle pain, stiffness or instability after a sprain that has been medically cleared
- Foot pain with walking, standing for long periods, or running
- Foot and ankle mechanics assessed alongside the knee and hip
- Returning to walking, running or sport after a foot or ankle problem
What to Expect
One-on-one care, built around you
Your care begins with a one-on-one evaluation. Rather than focusing on the symptoms alone, we establish a cause and effect relationship through accurate palpation and assessment of the body, then build a rehabilitation program customized to your individual needs.
- Ankle range of motion and strength tested, and your walking observed.
- Assessment of the knee and hip as part of the examination.
- Hands-on treatment where the findings support it, with a loading program for the foot and ankle.
- Guidance on footwear and on how much standing and walking to do while you are being treated.
Common Questions
Questions we are asked about Foot & Ankle Pain
- Do I need orthotics?
- That is not assumed before the examination. What the assessment finds about how you load the foot is what the discussion is based on.
- I sprained my ankle a while ago and it still feels unstable.
- Ankles that stay unstable after a sprain are a common presentation here, and strength and control work is usually a central part of the plan.
- What shoes should I bring?
- Bring the shoes you spend most of the day in, and your running or training shoes if the problem is related to sport. They are useful information.
- Do I need a referral, and is it covered?
- We accept major insurance providers, but coverage for foot and ankle treatment varies by plan, and some plans ask for a physician's referral or prescription while others do not. Call (212) 922-0044 before your first visit and we will confirm your coverage and tell you what, if anything, you need to bring.
