Sports Injuries

Rehabilitation aimed at the demands of your sport.

Sports Injuries physical therapy at Midtown East Physical Therapy in New York, NY

Sports Injuries

A sports injury is rehabilitated against the demands the sport actually places on the tissue, not against a general timeline. We examine the injured structure and the mechanics around it, treat what the examination finds, and progress loading through the stages your return requires. Progress is reviewed as you go rather than fixed at the start.

How It Works

How sports injuries are rehabilitated here

A sports injury is rehabilitated against the demands the sport places on the tissue rather than against a general timeline. The examination establishes what was injured, what else in the chain is contributing, and what the activity you are returning to actually requires.

Loading is then progressed in stages, with hands-on treatment alongside it where the findings support it. What stage you are at is reviewed against how you respond rather than fixed at the start.

What It Addresses

What sports injury treatment addresses

Sports injury treatment here is used to address presentations like these. What your return requires is established at the evaluation.

  • Muscle, tendon and joint injuries sustained in training or competition
  • Recurring injuries that return each time activity is resumed
  • Rehabilitation stages between an injury and a return to sport
  • Movement and loading assessed against the demands of a specific sport
  • Return to running, lifting, racket sports or team sport after an injury

What to Expect

One-on-one care, built around you

Your care begins with a one-on-one evaluation. Rather than focusing on the symptoms alone, we establish a cause and effect relationship through accurate palpation and assessment of the body, then build a rehabilitation program customized to your individual needs.

  1. A history that covers the sport, the training load and how the injury happened.
  2. Examination of the injured structure and the joints above and below it.
  3. A staged plan, with the criteria for progressing between stages explained.
  4. A home and gym program that runs alongside your treatment.

Common Questions

Questions we are asked about Sports Injuries

When can I get back to my sport?
That is answered against how you respond and what the stage-by-stage assessment shows, not by a date given at the first visit. Your therapist will tell you what has to be true before each step.
Can I keep training while I rehabilitate?
Often some training can continue in modified form. What to keep, what to change and what to hold off on is set at the evaluation.
Do you treat injuries from the gym as well as team sports?
Yes. The approach is the same: examine the injured structure and the chain around it, then load it back up against what your activity requires.
Do I need a referral, and is it covered?
We accept major insurance providers, but coverage for sports injury treatment varies by plan, and some plans ask for a physician's referral or prescription while others do not. Call (212) 922-0044 before your first visit and we will confirm your coverage and tell you what, if anything, you need to bring.
