Hip Problems
Hip, pelvis and low back examined as one region.

Hip Problems
Hip symptoms may come from the joint itself, from the surrounding muscles and tendons, or from the low back and pelvis referring into the hip and groin. Because those structures share so much, the examination looks at the region as a whole. Treatment combines hands-on work with the loading and mobility program the hip needs.
How It Works
How we assess and treat a hip
Hip symptoms may come from the joint itself, from the muscles and tendons around it, or from the low back and pelvis referring into the hip and groin. Because those structures share so much, the examination assesses the region as a whole.
Treatment combines hands-on work with a loading and mobility program. The hip carries body weight through every step, so the strength component is a large part of what the plan is built on.
What It Addresses
What hip treatment addresses
Hip treatment here is used to address presentations like these. What is driving yours is established at the evaluation.
- Hip or groin pain with walking, stairs, or getting in and out of a car
- Pain on the outside of the hip, including when lying on that side
- Stiffness and restricted hip range of motion identified on examination
- Hip symptoms being assessed alongside the low back and pelvis
- Returning to walking, running or gym work after a hip problem
What to Expect
One-on-one care, built around you
Your care begins with a one-on-one evaluation. Rather than focusing on the symptoms alone, we establish a cause and effect relationship through accurate palpation and assessment of the body, then build a rehabilitation program customized to your individual needs.
- Hip range of motion and strength tested, and your walking observed.
- Examination of the low back and pelvis as part of the hip assessment.
- Hands-on treatment where the findings support it, paired with specific loading work.
- A home program, progressed as your presentation changes.
Common Questions
Questions we are asked about Hip Problems
- Is my hip pain coming from my back?
- It can be, and distinguishing the two is one of the things the examination is for. Groin and buttock symptoms in particular can come from either.
- I am waiting for or recovering from a hip replacement. Can you help?
- Rehabilitation after hip surgery is treated here once your surgeon has cleared you. Bring any protocol or restrictions they have given you.
- Should I keep walking?
- Usually some activity is appropriate, but at what level is specific to your presentation. Your therapist will tell you after the examination.
- Do I need a referral, and is it covered?
- We accept major insurance providers, but coverage for hip treatment varies by plan, and some plans ask for a physician's referral or prescription while others do not. Call (212) 922-0044 before your first visit and we will confirm your coverage and tell you what, if anything, you need to bring.
